Brief

Brief

Due to its scale and grandeur, the ceremony was a key element of the 10-day competition of athletes from around the world. Its main goals were to increase awareness of The World Games in Poland, with particular emphasis on the residents of Wrocław; to promote Wrocław and Lower Silesia as a region attractive for tourism and culture (live international television coverage); and to promote the Games and the individual disciplines (ticket sales). An additional challenge was preparing the Opening Ceremony program to ensure a full capacity audience at the Wrocław stadium during the event.

Solutions

The 2017 World Games Opening Ceremony was the first project of its kind in Poland on such a large scale. The technical infrastructure was specially prepared for this purpose, including three stages on different levels weighing a total of 270 tons (including one placed 20 meters above the ground and adapted to the needs of a 60-piece orchestra), a set installed on one of the venue’s stands (covering an area of 25,000 m²), 2,500 lighting fixtures, and multimedia screens totaling 800 m² (which also served as the stage floor). Planning all the elements to enable the efficient and spectacular parade of 3,500 athletes was also crucial. As a result, this technical set-up enabled a spectacular performance of both the official portion and the artistic and musical portions.

A key challenge of the entire ceremony was adapting it to the demanding target group – people aged 25-35. Therefore, the entire event had to be executed in a dynamic and unconventional manner. The figure that united the various elements of the script was the Dwarf – a local symbol who, together with 400 artists (musicians and dancers), led the audience through the entire spectacle.

Results

  • 35,000 spectators at the stadium (all tickets sold out),
  • live broadcast to 133 countries,
  • broadcast reach – 420 million viewers,
  • 640,000 viewers on TV in Poland,
  • 295 media representatives from 40 countries attended the event.

The project received the Event of the Decade award.
